Available Now – The Inconsolables

After knitting together bones and sinews and pine needles in the Georgia woods, my new horror story collection, The Inconsolables, has been released into the neighborhoods and bookshelves of society! Many thanks to Bad Hand Books for giving this book an incredible home.

After selling out all 400 of the signed pre-orders, online sales have continued to be strong, with paperback and e-book copies flying off the virtual shelves. As of June 20, the book is available at all your usual online bookstores, many brick-and-mortar shops, and various libraries. If not, ask them to order it! That request can be a big boost to authors and publishers.

Here’s some general info about the collection, including author blurbs, table of contents, etc. And the cover, which I created myself.

Early reviews have been wonderful in these first few days. Here’s Sadie Hartmann’s long spoiler-free response to the book over at LitReactor, in which she covers each story and says amazing things like “Wehunt is the best there is at this” and “Michael Wehunt is one of my favorite, trusted guides navigating stories of grief and loss, sadness and regret.” It’s a truly humbling review.

Mike Botur both interviewed me and reviewed the collection at Ginger Nuts of Horror. In the former, I talk about how poetry impacts my work, among many other topics. “One of the most original writers in contemporary horror, serving up his signature dishes,” Mike had to say in his review.

In an insightful and incredibly kind review on her blog, Eva Roslin says, “A once-in-a-lifetime kind of writer who deserves to occupy the same place of reverence of a Laird Barron or Nathan Ballingrud.”

With my first collection, Greener Pastures, old-fashioned word-of-mouth did such incredible things, spreading the word about an almost entirely unknown horror author more effectively than anything I could have done myself. I think that word-of-mouth remains the single proudest accomplishment of my career so far, even more than the book deal I mention below. I can only hope that passionate readers will come back for more creepiness and richly drawn characters contending with darkness.

I’m eternally grateful for every $4.99 Kindle chance that’s taken on me and every $15.99 paperback that will soon be displayed on a bookshelf. Most of all, I’m eternally grateful for that greatest commodity — free time — that is spent on my work. Anyone who spends their time reading my stories humbles me, and I promise to never take it for granted. It is a beautiful thing.

And for anyone familiar with my work, you might like to know that I recently announced my debut novel. The October Film Haunt is coming from St. Martin’s Press! That title might ring a resonant bell for anyone who’s read Greener Pastures and a certain story called “October Film Haunt: Under the House,” which has long been a favorite of my readers. But even more, “The Pine Arch Collection” from The Inconsolables plays a creepy role in this novel, too. Here’s a teaser:

The Inconsolables is currently on sale at Bookshop, but as mentioned above, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other avenues have it, too. Thank you so much for coming into the woods with me…now be sure to “tap your own personal terror, real as blood. Breathe it into the camera with authenticity.”
